Aya Takano

Aya Takano (Japanese, b. 1976) is a preeminent figure in the Superflat art movement and a central member of the Kaikai Kiki collective founded by Takashi Murakami. Renowned for her distinctive universe where science fiction, Japanese tradition, and eroticism converge, Takano creates floating, androgynous female figures with large eyes and elongated limbs. Her work draws heavily from manga and anime aesthetics but reinterprets them through a unique, often feminist lens, exploring themes of female sexuality, urbanization, and a fantastical future.
A graduate of Tama Art University, Takano has exhibited globally, including major solo shows at the Musée d'Art Contemporain de Lyon and the Perrotin galleries in Paris, New York, and Hong Kong. Her paintings, drawings, and writings build a mythology that transcends cultural boundaries, making her one of the most significant female voices in contemporary Japanese art. Her works are highly sought after by collectors fascinated by the intersection of otaku culture and high art.
